‘MMA fragments’ is an
independent journal issued by Tokyo-based architectural studio MMA, conceived
to visualize its interest in and unique perspective of materials. Reflecting on the burden of architecture
on the development of centralized cities, and natural environment, MMA also
embrace the spirituality, aesthetic, and richness of the craft of the human
hand. Research into regional
culture, traditional construction methods and natural materials local to a
building enables MMA to collaborate with artisans and workshops to develop new
materials and products that achieve a contemporary architectural language. The development of innovative building
materials inspired by and using nature as a prototype and material is
fundamental to the architectural approach of MMA. Utilizing these materials,
MMA can seamlessly place artisanal elements into urban landscapes. The practice of MMA continues with the
aim of generating and exploring new versions of this development cycle.
